How long does it take?

There are a few steps involved in changing your name and it can take a little longer if you are changing your name legally.  Once you have your Marriage or Legal Name Change Certificate get about 10-15 certified copies. With an Easy Name Change personalised kit you can have sent off all your name change notifications within an hour or two of receiving your kit.

How long does it take? (Marriage and reverting to maiden name)

First you need your full Marriage Certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM). If you are reverting to your maiden or prior name you will also need your Birth Certificate or a Divorce Order.  Application forms are available with your kit.

It can take around 2 weeks for your marriage certificate to be available after your ceremony.

Your Marriage or Birth Certificate is usually delivered within 1-2 weeks of your application.

Put aside a few hours to get photocopies and certified copies of your documents. 

Allow an hour to sign letters and faxes, complete any forms and add supporting documents before sending.

A few organisations require you to visit an outlet in person so your signature can be witnessed.  This includes banks, Medicare office, drivers licences and passport interviews.

How long does it take for legal name change?

Put aside a few hours to complete the Legal Name Change Application form (included in your kit).  Unless you are lodging in person, you will need certified copies of your supporting documents.  In some cases it will be quite specific who can certify your documents so be sure to read the form closely.

Successful applicants will receive their RBDM Name Change Certificate within about 2-4 weeks. Make around 10-20 copies and have half certified.  Then allow about an hour to  can sign and send all your Easy Name Change letters, faxes and forms.

Unlike married name change or reverting to a maiden name, legal name change applicants must change their name immediately and for all purposes.  You should aim to have notified all organisations of your new name within 2-3 weeks of receiving your certificate.
