Married Overseas

Marriage certificates issued by foreign government departments are not accepted as evidence of your new name by Australian most organisaitons. If you were married overseas you will need a Change of Name certificate, or a marriage certificate issued in Australia.

If you lodge your name change application in the same state as your birth, you will be issued with an amended birth certificate showing your name at birth and your new name.  If you live in a different state fron your birth you will get a legal name change certificate birth state or your state of residence (exc. Qld and NSW residents - you must lodge in your birth state). For more information, including costs and turnaround times, read our section on legal name change.

Your other option is to get married in Australia so you will be issued with an Australian Marriage Certificate.  You can do this either before or after your overseas wedding.  Just make sure any flights are purchased under the name that currently appears in your passport.  If you want to get married at the Registry office, please contact the registry directly for more information.
