Drivers License Name Change

Driver’s licenses & vehicle registrations are issued by the road authority from each state.  Make your driver’s license one of the first documents to change as it may make other changes easier down the track.  Changing the name on your driver’s license is a free service, but your old license must be surrendered.  This process needs to be done in person (except WA) and you will need your existing license, potentially other identity documents to achieve 100 point ID check and either your original name change document or a certified copy.  If you live in the ACT you will also need to prove residency. An appointment is usually not required.
