Legal Name Change by Province
Some provinces require you to submit your fingerprints to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They run a background check against their database for any criminal record. Some provinces have strict regulations around who can change their name, age and residency. See the table below for a summary of legal name change requirements for the more populous states.

Background information and turn around times can also differ greatly between states. Quebec tends to be most strict, only allowing name change where a significant reason can be provided and taking 6 months for applications to be finalised.
Some provinces require fingerprints to be taken by the RCMP, which has an additional charge of $25. Alberta residents can also expect to pay an additional fee to a Registry Agent who will lodge the name change application on your behalf. Agent lodgement fees can vary.
