What is the deed poll cost?

If you decide to change your name by deed poll there are a few costs involved and there can also be a substantial investment in your time to go through the process.  There are 2 parts to changing names. The first is obtaining your Deed Poll document which can cost between £15 and £150, depending on who prepares your deed poll.  The second part is notifying all organisations of your new name, which involves obtaining new identification documents and updating your accounts.

There are two ways to get a deed poll document; you can either use an dedicated deed poll organisation which costs between £15-£40, or you can use a solicitor which can cost anywhere from £25-£150, depending on the solicitors fee structure.  We also recommend getting 2-3 certified deeds so you have spare copies should they ever be needed.  Most companies will charge a nominal fee for additional copies, but it’s usually cheaper and easier to get several copies at the same time you apply. 

Once your name has been changed you must immediately use it for all purposes and renounce your prior name.  It is your responsibility to contact each and every organisation where you hold an account, membership or identification and notify them of your new name.  Organisations all set their own policy on name change, so sometimes you can do it over the phone, other times you will be required to send a form, visit a branch in person or send a letter with your original deed.  Researching name change procedures for all your organisations, then creating notification letters and faxes usually takes 5-6 hours.

Most organisations don’t charge to have your account or identification updated.  The only cost you can expect is when updating your passport, in which case full application fees apply.  As part of your deed poll you have renounced your name for all purposes, so you must update your passport immediately.  If you have any remaining time in your passport, only a maximum of 9 months will be credited in your new passport.
