How Do I Change My Name?

When changing names there are generally 2 parts to the process.  First you need to get an official document that lists your old name and your new name, and the type of document you get will depend on your reason for name change.

Marriage Name Change
Marriage is the most common reason for changing names, with around 85% of UK brides taking their husband's name after marriage.  The only official document you need to start the name change process is your marriage certificate.

Deed Poll Name Change
If you want to change the spelling or order of names, add, or remove a name or even if you want a whole new name, a name change deed is usually required.  There other accepted ways to change names, such as a sworn statement, or a letter from a person of responsibility, however to update identification documents and bank accounts with minimal fuss a deed poll is recommended.  Easy Name Change does not sell deed polls. Divorce or Separation
If you want to revert to your maiden name your decree nisi will be accepted by all organisations.  If you are not yet divorced you can still change names using other documents.  Read our section on separation name change for more information.

I have my name change document.  Now what?

It is your responsibility to contact all the organisations where you hold identification, an account or membership and notify them of your new name.  There are two ways you can go about this.

If you have the time, create a list of every organisation and get on the phone to ask their name change procedure.  Some will want a letter to be sent, some may provide you with a special form.  Most organisations require a copy of your name change document, with some requiring certification.  Then get busy with all the paperwork.
