DVLA Name Change

For England, Scotland and Wales, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will be able to update the name on your driver’s licence and car registration. You must notify the DVLA immediately after changing your name and should send in your driving licence for amendment.  You should also notify the DVLA regarding your car registration using a different form.

The DVLA allow brides to take a double barrelled or hyphenated surname on presentation of just a wedding certificate, so if you are adding your partners name to your own we recommend updating your licence first.  Your updated licence can be used as evidence of your new name with other organisations who may otherwise insist on a deed poll.

The DVA manage the same process in Northern Ireland and also require you to update your licence and car registration as soon as practical after your wedding.  You can check the DVA website for further information.
