Apply in the county where one of the parties resides. The license allows you to get married anywhere in New Jersey.

If you both live out of state you should apply in the county where you intend to get married. 

Check your local county’s application process online, as they may accept walk in applications or you may need to make an appointment. The wedding license becomes valid 72 hours after ordering, for a maximum of 6 months. When you attend take the following original documents:

• state or federal photo ID
• If at least one person lives in NJ, proof of  residency 
• Proof of SSN
• A witness (18 years plus)
• $28 application fee
• If you bring in your own license application form, ensure it is not signed as you must have it witnessed under oath

Once you have been married, the license should be filed in the same county where the wedding took place.

The fastest way to get a certificate is to apply in person at the county Vital Registrar’s Office. As the completed license is filed in the county where the wedding took place, you should apply for your wedding certificate in the same county.

Most counties offer walk-in service. Some also have mail or phone service. Check your county website for hours and full details on how to order.

A certificate usually costs between $10 and $20 (fees may vary between counties.)  Call your county registrar or check their website as some counties may offer ordering by phone, mail or online.

Start with updating your name with the SSA. Start by answering a few questions at the SSA website at https://www.ssa.gov/personal-record/change-name.

If you were married more that 60 days ago, some applicants may have both their identity and marriage record confirmed and their name can be changed without any further steps.

If you are not eligible for an online name change, you will be directed to complete your name change in person at an SSA location. You will also be instructed as to what original proof documents will be needed.

Although the change is visible to other agencies, like the DMV, within 2 or 3 working days, it is recommended you wait until your new SSA card arrives in case you need to prove your name change has taken effect.

Once your name has been changed with the SSA it’s time to front up at the NJ MVC. Simply walk into any MVC license issuing center. Take the following original documents:

• Current NJ driver’s license
• marriage certificate
• “6 points” documents (One primary, one secondary and one proof of home address)
• Proof of SSN

If you are applying for REAL ID, you also need 2 x proofs of residential address in addition to the list above.

Your driver’s license and vehicle title can be changed on the same visit! Attend your local MVA in person. You can book an appointment ahead online. Take the following original documents:

• Current vehicle title or registration card
• Current NJ driver’s license
• Original marriage certificate

There is a $60 fee to change the name on your vehicle title and $5 for registration. 

If your wedding and US passport were both within the past 12 months, get a free replacement passport by completing form DS-5504.

For anyone else with a valid US passport, start your name change with form DS-82. Full passport renewal fees are payable: $130 for a passport book and $30 for the card.
