Banking Name Change Procedure

It’s important to change the name on your Truist account soon after changing names. It can create problems and be difficult to prove your ID or cash checks when you have accounts with different names.

Like with most banks, Truist customers need to attend a branch in person with original proof of their name change, such as their marriage certificate, court order or divorce decree. You will need to show an updated photo ID, so you’ll need to follow the process below:

  1. Get proof of your name change (eg: marriage certificate or court order).
  2. Order an Easy Name Change kit and get detailed filing instructions and ready to send notifications.
  3. File the the SSA name change form, included in your kit (in person or by mail).
  4. Wait for proof the SSA has changed your name, then attend your state DMV in person to update your driver or non-driver ID card.
  5. Sign and send off your Easy Name Change letters, forms and emails (this covers about half your companies, eg: utilities, insurance, credit cards, loyalty clubs).
  6. Attend a Truist branch in person once you have updated photo ID.
  7. Follow the Easy Name Change checklist to update all other companies where you can’t send in a notification (eg: PayPal, Amazon, Netflix).
