Before you can change names on your Charles Schwab accounts, you’ll first need to update your photo ID, so start by following these steps:
- Attend any SSA location in person. Take a completed SSA name change form, proof of name change and primary ID (eg: US passport or state ID card). We provide the SSA name change form in our kit, or you may get this from their website. You can file the form by mail, but it’s not ideal because you need to provide original primary ID and the SSA prefer not to receive this by mail. The SSA processes your name change on the spot but it can take 2 or 3 days for other agencies to see the updated details.

- Attend a Charles Schwab branch in person with your updated photo ID.
