Charles Schwab Name Change Procedure

Before you can change names on your Charles Schwab accounts, you’ll first need to update your photo ID, so start by following these steps:

  1. Attend any SSA location in person. Take a completed SSA name change form, proof of name change and primary ID (eg: US passport or state ID card). We provide the SSA name change form in our kit, or you may get this from their website. You can file the form by mail, but it’s not ideal because you need to provide original primary ID and the SSA prefer not to receive this by mail. The SSA processes your name change on the spot but it can take 2 or 3 days for other agencies to see the updated details.
  2. Next, file for a name change with your state DMV. All states require you to attend an office in person and some may have a form. If so, we provide the form in our name change kit. Check our instructions to know what proof documents to take with you.
  3. Attend a Charles Schwab branch in person with your updated photo ID.
  4. Send off your Easy Name Change letters, forms and emails to update your name everywhere else. We have over 1,000 organizations in our database, so we guarantee you’ll save hours or we will cheerfully refund your money.
  5. Not every company allows you to request your name change in writing, so follow the instructions in your personalized checklist as there will be some places where you need to log into your account, call or visit in person
