Start by applying for an SSA card in your new name by visiting any SSA location. You need to take the SSA name change form and primary photo ID. The SSA changes your name on the spot, but it takes a few days for the change to be visible to DMV staff. The DMV must be able to see your new name with the SSA as they only allow a name that is an exact match.
