Ordering Your Ontario Marriage Certificate

If you were married in Ontario you may have been provided with a record of solemnization. This is a keepsake of your wedding and is not usually accepted as proof of your new name. You need to order the official marriage certificate through Service Ontario. It takes between 6 and 8 weeks for marriages to be registered with Service Ontario, and then your marriage certificate is ready to order. It’s easiest to order online from Service Ontario’s website. You may instead order in person at any Service Ontario location or complete the paper application form provided in your name change kit. No matter how you order, a marriage certificate costs $15. If your wedding was at least 6 weeks ago then online orders are processed within 15 working days (plus allow time for delivery by mail).

Use your marriage certificate as proof of your new name

If you decide to change names, start by visiting any Service Ontario office to update your driver’s licence and health care card. Be sure to take your original marriage certificate and driver’s licence with you. Next, visit your bank to change names in person. Most other changes can be requested in writing. Click the button below to get company-specific name change forms, letters and emails. Just attach the proof listed, sign and send! Where companies don’t require name changes to be sent in writing, we provide detailed instructions on what steps to follow so you don’t waste hours on hold.
