The process for changing your name with the University of Queensland depends on whether you are a current student or a former student. Current students can request an update through the my.UQ dashboard, while graduates may also need to follow a separate process to replace graduation documents issued in their previous name.

Changing your name as a current UQ student

Log in to the my.UQ dashboard and submit a legal name update request. You will need to upload a scan or clear photograph of an accepted original document showing your correct legal name.

UQ accepts documents including a passport, Australian driver licence, marriage certificate, birth certificate or official change of name certificate. Your student record can only be changed to match the name shown on your supporting documents.

If you have a HELP loan, make sure the name and date of birth recorded by UQ also match the details held by the Australian Taxation Office. You should update your ATO records through myGov or by phone where necessary.

Changing your legal name in the student system does not automatically change your UQ email address. You can separately update your email display name or request a new email address.

Changing your name as a former UQ student

Former students can apply to have their legal name updated on their UQ academic record. The request must be supported by suitable evidence of the name change.

Updating your academic record is separate from obtaining replacement graduation documents. If you need a degree certificate in your new name, you must also apply for a replacement testamur.

Changing the name on your UQ degree certificate

UQ graduates can order a replacement paper testamur displaying their new name. You must first update your name with UQ and return your original paper testamur.

A replacement paper testamur due to a name change currently costs $100 and is issued in UQ’s current certificate style. It will show the original date your award was conferred as well as the date the replacement was issued.

Applications generally take at least 10 working days to process. During July and December, processing may take up to 15 working days.

If your original testamur has been lost or destroyed, additional requirements and a different replacement fee may apply.

Other UQ records to check

After your legal name has been updated, check whether you also need to update your:

* Student identification card
* Student email display name or email address
* Unique Student Identifier record
* Australian Taxation Office details
* HELP loan information
* Digital graduation documents held through My eQuals

Some UQ systems may continue displaying your previous name until they have been updated separately.
