Name Change when married overseas

Most New Zealand organisations don’t accept foreign marriage certificates as evidence of your new name.  If you want to take your husband’s name after marriage you have three choices;

1) Conduct a NZ marriage ceremony either before or after your overseas wedding.  This will give you access to a NZ marriage certificate and also ensures your marriage is recognised in New Zealand.

2) Undertake a Legal Name Change by Statutory Declaration.  See our section on legal name change for more information.

3) Change specific documents first.  It is up to each organisation as to what documents they accept as evidence of your new name.  Only some organisations allow name change with a foreign marriage certificate.  You can update these documents first then use your updated ID as supporting evidence with other organisations.  Sometimes you may need to persist to have your request actioned.   This option is explained in further detail in the Easy Name Change guide.
